BACKGROUND:

The position of Mesquite Constable became vacant on January 2, 2024.  Pursuant to Nevada Revised Statute 245.170, the Board of County Commissioners shall appoint a suitable person who is an elector of the county to fill the vacancy.  Additionally, because the vacancy occurred 30 days or more before the close of filing of declarations of candidacy and was not already scheduled for election this year, the Office will be placed on the 2024 ballot.

At the Board meeting on February 20, 2024, the Board gave direction that it would wait to decide the vacancy until after closing of filing on March 15, 2024.  As of close of filing, only Wyatt Kenneth Oliver had filed to run for the position of Mesquite Constable.  Mr. Oliver is employed as a Sergeant with the Mesquite Police Department, where he has worked since 2007.  He otherwise meets the requirements for the position, to include being Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission ("POST") certified.
