BACKGROUND:

The Clark County (County) Department of Real Property Management submitted a grant application to the Nevada Division of Forestry for a Community Forest Grant in the amount of $350,000 to provide labor to plant donated trees in underserved communities across the County.  The donated trees will be housed in a re-established nursery capable of managing up to 448 trees upon build-out. The County intends to plant a minimum of 233 trees annually, for a total of at least 700 trees, over three (3) years.

This project will enhance the tree canopy in underserved and disadvantaged communities within the Las Vegas Metropolitan Area, for the purposes of urban heat island mitigation resulting from climate change. The re-established nursery will house donated trees while planting sites are identified and prepared. The labor will assist the County in planting donated trees.

This item was presented to the County Long Range Planning Committee on January 10, 2024.
