BACKGROUND:
The Department of Energy (DOE) will fund lighting technologies at Clark County outdoor sites: McCarran Marketplace Park, Mountains Edge Regional Park, Desert Bloom Park and Shadow Rock Park with $2 million total installation cost and 50% federal cost share. The project intends to reduce energy consumption by replacing traditional outdoor lighting fixtures with energy-efficient LED technology. The project's expected outcomes are: a significant reduction in energy consumption, leading to lower electricity costs and greenhouse gas emissions, contribution to the preservation of natural resources and ecosystems by minimizing light pollution, protecting wildlife habitats, and preserving dark skies for astronomical observations, long-term cost savings through reduced energy bills and maintenance expenses and improving the safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers in outdoor areas, while also deterring potential criminal activities. The initial grant period runs from 10/01/2024 - 9/30/2025.
