BACKGROUND:

The MacArthur Foundation’s Safety and Justice Challenge is a more than $252 million national initiative to reduce over-incarceration and eliminate racial inequities in our justice systems by changing the way America thinks about and uses jails. The Safety and Justice Challenge is supporting local leaders in 51 jurisdictions across 32 states who are implementing evidence-based solutions to safely reduce jail populations, advance racial equity, and eliminate ineffective, inefficient, and unfair practices.

The purpose of the grant is to continue the support of Clark County's participation as the Implementation Site in the Safety and Justice Challenge, the Foundation’s criminal justice reform initiative to safely reduce over- incarceration. Clark County is one of 28 Implementation Sites nationally that are receiving funding and expert technical assistance from the Foundation to implement reforms to make their local justice systems fairer and more effective.

Clark County serves as the lead agency in the Safety and Justice Challenge Network and works with stakeholders and partners in the criminal justice community to devise and implement strategies aimed at safely reducing the jail population, addressing system inefficiencies and disparities, advancing racial equality, and improving case processing for pretrial defendants.

Staff requests that the Board ratify the submission of the grant application and accept any funds awarded.
