BACKGROUND:

Nevada currently leads the nation with a death rate from stimulants hitting 7.5 per 1000. Currently, stimulants are on track to surpass opioid misuse in Nevada. According to CASAT on Demand, Nevada coroner statistics show that from 2012-2017 methamphetamines was the most prevalent drug encountered in overdose deaths.

This project grant is a comprehensive community-based primary prevention plan approach designed to address the opiate and stimulant use for offenders re-entering the community.  The District Court, Parole and Probation, and the Nevada Department of Prisons will work together to identify program participants, begin a stabilization period with MAT prior to release (if appropriate), and place participants into residential inpatient services, or housing with intensive outpatient counseling and treatment upon release.  In addition, participants will receive case management services for educational and vocational skills.  The goals of this project are to reduce the overdose of opiates when released from incarceration, decrease relapse and recidivism, and provide tools to remain in the community and out of incarceration.

The Eighth Judicial District Court intends to utilize multiple providers for transitional housing and treatment with the use of a master services agreement. Additionally, all providers will be SAPTA certified. The grant provides for the partial salary of a Specialty Court Specialist (I29) to take on a caseload and conduct the research and evaluation this grant requires. The additional portion of the salary is covered by the States no cost extension funds H79TI080265.
