BACKGROUND:
The Mt. Charleston License Plate Program was created during the 1999 Nevada legislative session. NRS 482.37935 details the creation of the plate, collection of the fees and how the funds should be spent. The funds in the account must be used only for the support of programs for the natural environment of the Mt. Charleston area, including, without limitation, programs to improve the wildlife habitat, ecosystem, forest, public access to the area and its recreational use and must not be used to replace or supplant money available from other sources.
Grant applications were made available to the public on February 2, 2026 through February 27, 2026. A total of five, eligible applications were received from three different agencies and groups (Mt. Charleston Fire Protection District, Southern Nevada Offroad Recovery and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department) totaling $129,087.14.
On April 2, the Mt. Charleston Town Advisory Board provided applicants an opportunity to give a brief presentation to highlight the significance of their proposed project(s). Following an in-depth review, three groups were recommended for funding totaling $140,123.00. The amount includes up to 10% of the project's cost, should the cost of goods quoted increase during the evaluation process.
The Board of County Commissioners (BCC) may provide funds from the account to an appropriate person or entity to carry out the provisions previously stated.
