BACKGROUND:
On February 13, 2023, the Clark County Parks & Recreation (CCPR) Department was notified by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) about the availability of current grant opportunities, specifically the "Out of School Time Youth Mentoring" grant. This grant offers funding for training, peer networking, and resources to support the development and implementation of mentoring programs within parks and recreation settings.
CCPR initially planned to allocate $25,000 in FY24 and $25,000 in FY25, totaling $50,000 over a 2.5-year period. These funds are intended to support the Leaders of the Future teen program, which offers leadership development opportunities for teens throughout Clark County. This program has been instrumental in fostering youth engagement, with many past participants advancing to both part-time and full-time positions within the department.
The funding will be utilized to expand both one-on-one and group mentoring initiatives, focusing on enhancing social-emotional skills, improving academic performance, and addressing critical issues such as bullying prevention and family engagement. Additionally, funds will support the implementation of new activities aimed at improving overall social, academic, and behavioral outcomes for participating youth.
In October 2024, CCPR was contacted by NRPA with exciting news: based on the success and alignment of our current programming with the goals of the grant, NRPA has awarded an additional $10,625 in funding to further support these efforts.
The expanded funding will enable CCPR to offer a broader range of activities designed to promote positive youth development. These activities will include STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) programs, youth sports, environmental education, outdoor recreation, and arts and cultural activities. The overarching goal of this grant initiative is to increase positive youth behaviors, with a specific emphasis on academic performance and social-emotional well-being.
