BACKGROUND:
Henry Prendes was Sergeant for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for 15 years before he was fatally gunned down in response to a domestic violence incident. Sergeant Prendes was assigned to the Enterprise Area Command which included the Hidden Palms Park. Outside of work, Sergeant Prendes was an avid user of the park. Before his death, Sergeant Prendes and his wife, Dawn, had begun planning to acquire land to build a youth camp, now known as Henry’s Place, located in Utah. Henry’s Place selects at-risk youth from the Las Vegas Valley and offers life-changing experiences, instruction, and opportunities to at-risk and underprivileged children and youth - to equip them to succeed in facing the challenges of growing up in the inner-city. Sergeant Prendes' daughters, with support of Sheriff Andy Walsh, have requested to rename the Park to Henry Prendes Park. The Park was initially named Hidden Palms in response to a naming competition held at Beatty ES in 1994.
Upon review of the naming policy and provided information, RPM found that under the Naming Policy, a park may be renamed so long as the original name did not have geographical, historical or other significance and was not named after an individual. In addition, consideration for naming improvements is given if there is a 50% or more financial contribution and/or a significant geographical tie to the improvement. The request is made to rename the park "Henry Prendes Park at Hidden Palms."
