BACKGROUND:

As authorized by N.R.S. 244.299, since 2004, Department of Juvenile Justice Services (DJJS) has operated a work program for youth under the supervision of Spring Mountain Youth Camp (SMYC) in cooperation with the United States (U.S.) Forest Service for the past 53 years.

U.S. Forest Service will reimburse SMYC for the Forest Service's share of the actual cost incurred, not to exceed, $19,664.57, as shown in the Financial Plan (see attached). Annually, by March 31, U.S. Forest Service and SMYC meet and develop the annual operating and financial plan.  Once the operating and financial plan is approved, a written modification providing additional funding is prepared by U.S. Forest Service.

The SMYC work program provides paid work experience for delinquent youth. Youth involved with the program develop work skills and satisfy court-ordered restitution when applicable. This work program includes maintenance of recreation areas and hiking trails, trash pickup and graffiti removal, and other similar activities in the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area.
