BACKGROUND:
President John F. Kennedy first proclaimed National Public Works Week as an annual reminder of the many ways public works-related services and programs contribute to the nation's overall quality of life. Since 1960, the American Public Works Association (APWA) has observed National Public Works Week annually to increase the awareness of the public works industry.
During this week, engineers and other professionals are recognized for their efforts in designing, building, maintaining, and managing essential systems that provide traffic safety, transportation, neighborhood maintenance, water, sewer, and other critical services necessary throughout the United States. Over the years and as evidenced during stateside and national challenges, Public Works agencies have shown their consistency and demonstrated that communities depend daily on public works, and the men and women of the profession are always there and always ready.
Commissioner Gibson would like to present a proclamation to APWA's Nevada Chapter and proclaim the week of May 21-27, 2023 under the theme, "Connecting the World Through Public Works" as National Public Works Week in appreciation to the fine people in the public works industry for their hard work and dedication to this community ensuring the health, safety and welfare of our citizens of Nevada.
Andrew Howard (Southern Nevada Branch Chair) with the APWA will accept the proclamation from the Board of County Commissioners in recognition of National Public Works Week.
Joubin Pakpour, APWA Region VIII Director, is here to present a plaque to Jimmy Floyd, the 2023 APWA Top Ten Public Works Leader of the Year. Mr. Floyd was nominated and selected for this award due to aptly reflecting the values of the organization and his service to the community. He is the third Clark County Public Works employee to receive this award.
