BACKGROUND:

On January 7, 2013, the Board of County Commissioners adopted an ordinance revising County Code provisions relating to police involved deaths. A new fact-finding procedure was developed to take the place of the previous Coroner's Inquest process. The new process is referred to as the Police Fatality Public Fact-finding Review Process. Each fact-finding review will include an Ombudsperson to represent the family and the public in the proceedings and a Hearing Officer to oversee the Fact-finding Review.

On January 15, 2011, the Board of County Commissioners appointed the initial Ombudsperson and Hearing Officer Panel. Then again on April 2, 2013; March 3, 2015; June 18, 2019; August 3, 2021; and August 5, 2025, the Board approved additional members. This item asks the Board to appoint an additional qualified individual to serve on the Police Fatality Public Fact-finding Ombudsperson Panel.
