BACKGROUND:
Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children in Southern Nevada. Swimming pools pose a particular danger to children, primarily those less than four years old, as most drownings occur in a backyard setting.
There are more than 130,000 backyard swimming pools in Southern Nevada, and many having been constructed before the Southern Nevada Pool Code came into effect in 2003, which requires secondary barriers to further prohibit young children from accessing a pool without adult supervision.
The Southern Nevada Chapter, International Code Council's primary mission is to protect the lives and property of the citizens of Southern Nevada by improving and strengthening the site-built environment.
In addition to improving the site-built environment, the Southern Nevada Chapter, International Code Council believes teaching toddlers to swim is the best way to reduce toddler drownings. In each of the past ten years, the Southern Nevada Chapter has donated to the Parks and Recreation Departments of each local jurisdiction in Clark County to provide free swim lessons to toddlers' four-years-old and younger.
If there is an insufficient number of toddlers to expend the entire $2,500, the funds may be used to provide free or disDonationDonationDonation counted swim lessons for children of any age or for any activity that directly promotes pool safety.
