BACKGROUND:
In accordance with the County Arts Plan of the Clark County Code in section 2.90.030 of title 2, and per the original arts plan language established on 12/4/13 agenda item 49; the Art Committee will consist of seven (7) artists, art professionals and other County residents with art expertise. The committee will evaluate proposed and existing County development projects, select sites for which art will be commissioned, and recommend approaches and budgets for commissioning artworks for each site. Of the seven members, one shall be a faculty member of the UNLV Art Department, one a faculty member of the Art & Art History Program of the Department of Fine Arts at CSN, one a professional architect or landscape architect, one an independent professional artist, and one a staff member of the City of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs if such individuals are available to serve. Members shall be chosen by the Department of Parks and Recreation and the selections ratified by the BCC. The recommended appointee is Kenneth Ruffin, will fill the seat of independent professional artist representative. He is replacing Harold Bradford who termed out in April. This is Mr. Ruffin's first term.
Kenneth Ruffin is a passionate artist, art teacher, and art patron with a deep appreciation for fine art expression. Growing up in rural Choctaw County, Alabama, his talent for sketching and painting ignited at a young age. He pursued higher education, obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Alabama and furthered his studies in Art and Museum Studies at California State University Northridge and California State University, Hayward. Kenneth's journey in the arts took him from Los Angeles to Atlanta before finally settling in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he currently teaches art at the 100 Academy of Excellence. Throughout his career, he has not only showcased his own artwork in various exhibitions but also played a key role in fostering artistic self-expression in children, inspiring them to pursue careers in art. Kenneth Ruffin remains actively involved in the artistic community, curating shows for local and nationally known artists and creating opportunities for students to display their work. His dedication to teaching, promoting art education, and providing platforms for young artists to showcase their creativity has left a lasting impact on the arts scene in Las Vegas and beyond.
