BACKGROUND:

DSD submits a SCAAP grant application to the U.S. Department of Justice annually.  The program implements Section 241(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act to provide financial assistance to states and local governments that are incarcerating undocumented criminal aliens.  This will be the 23rd year that DSD has participated in the program.

The amount of the award is not determined until after all the applications have been received and reviewed by the Bureau of Justice Assistance.  The amount of the award varies year to year due to a formula that distributes the total funds available by determining each agency’s eligible bed days as a percentage of the total eligible bed days submitted by all agencies.  The last award to DSD was $1,041,081.

SCAAP funds must be used for correctional purposes only, subject to the current published use of funds list.  The eligible uses of this award will be to fund corrections officer’s salaries and wages, including overtime.
