BACKGROUND: 

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a condition where the heart suddenly stops beating.  It is different from a heart attack because SCA is an electrical problem with the heart. In a normal heart, there are electrical impulses that cause the heart to contract and relax.  If the electrical pulses suddenly vanish, it is Sudden Cardiac Arrest.  When SCA occurs, the time it takes to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) on the victim is directly related to their chances of survival.  Research has proven that when a person having an SCA is shocked with an AED within 1 minute, their chance of survival is 90%, at three minutes 70%, at five minutes 50%, and so on.  AEDs installed at sports complexes can directly impact the safety of players, officials, and spectators.  Research has shown that heart attacks will occur whether our community adolescents or adults know they have a heart condition. 

Six automated external defibrillators (AED) will be installed on the light poles at the James Regional Sports Park to accompany the previously installed four.  Four additional units will be installed at the Desert Diamonds Baseball Complex. These AED units will be installed through the department of Real Property Management.  The Parks and Recreation Department will maintain responsibility for the replacement and servicing of the units' batteries and pads only.  In the event of theft or damage, Clark County will not bear responsibility for replacement or repair to these units.  

The Department of Parks and Recreation appreciates the generosity from the Adamsheart Foundation and recommends acceptance of this donation to benefit the patrons and community of both the James Regional Sports Park and the Desert Diamonds Baseball Complex.
