BACKGROUND:
Clark County partners with the Heaven Can Wait Animal Society to provide low cost and free sterilization to the citizens of unincorporated Clark County. The Heaven Can Wait Animal Society received a $120,000 grant at the June 2, 2020 Clark County Board of County Commissioners meeting, with a goal to sterilize 1,600 owned cats and dogs for little to no cost to unincorporated Clark County residents. Additionally, Heaven Can Wait Animal Society had a goal to sterilize at least 3,900 feral or community cats.
From July 2020 to March 2021, Heaven Can Wait Animal Society sterilized 1,244 owned dogs and cats and 4,342 feral cats at the weekday and monthly feral cat clinics. Despite the pandemic, Heaven Can Wait is on track to meet its established goals for Fiscal Year 2021. Of the owned dogs and cats, 12 owners were eligible for food stamps (SNAP) and 171 were on Medicaid. Additionally, of the 1,244 owned dogs and cats that were sterilized, 151 of them were a result of Clark County Animal Control Citations. Funds generated from the sale of Animal Appreciation special license plates and impound fees will be granted to support these on-going efforts to reduce the number of unwanted animals born each year.
Approval of this resolution will provide the additional necessary funds to Heaven Can Wait Animal Society for the 2022 Fiscal Year.
