BACKGROUND:

The Moapa Valley Fire Protection District (District) was created pursuant to NRS 474.460 and Clark County
Code Chapter 3.20. The District was created for the protection of property, public health, safety, and welfare of
the inhabitants of Clark County.

The Wildland Fire Protection Program is a State program managed by the Nevada Division of Forestry that provides assistance to public agencies before, during, and after a major wildfire.  This assistance includes fire prevention work including public education and fuel mitigation projects, state resources during a wildfire to include incident command teams, hand crews and aviation resources, and incident billing and application for federal funding.  The program acts as an insurance policy for the District by providing payment for services provided under the agreement during catastrophic wildfires such as the Carpenter Fire in 2013. The Carpenter Fire burned for 14 days and had a final cost of approximately $28 million, of that cost, $900,000 was deemed as Clark County’s portion.  This program would cover those costs if a fire like the Carpenter Fire happened within the District, eliminating the financial burden to the District.  This program will cost approximately $1,701.00 annually for a 2-year period.
