BACKGROUND:

The NV DHHS-DCFS is administering the funding for the 2022 State VOCA Grant. The VOCA Formula Grant Program, created under the 1984 Victims of Crime Act, provides federal funding nationwide to support victim assistance and compensation programs, to provide training for diverse professionals who work with victims, to develop projects that enhance victims’ rights and services and to undertake public education and awareness activities on behalf of crime victims. VOCA is administered at the federal level through the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) which annually awards a grant to each state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. Territories. States have sole discretion in determining which organizations will receive funds and in what amounts, as long as the recipients meet the requirements of VOCA and the Program Guidelines.

The Clark County District Attorney’s Office Victim Witness Assistance Center (VWAC) is dedicated to assisting victims and witnesses through the criminal prosecution system.  Created in 1976, VWAC strives to provide victim centered services through best practices and community partnerships. VWAC’s mission is to provide compassionate service to victims, witnesses, and our community.  VWAC strives to make the criminal justice system and procedures more victim-centered by addressing the most basic needs created by victimization: Safety, Financial Support, Psychological/Emotional Support and Clear and Accurate Information.  VWAC is requesting grant funding for additional staff to cover and provide the necessary services of victims of crime in Clark County.

Staff requests that the Board ratify the submission of the grant application and accept any funds awarded.
