Agenda note: DISCUSSION: Following introduction of the item, Commissioner Kirkpatrick recognized and presented proclamations to the Clark County Summer Business Institute (SBI) Program partners for serving youth for 25 years; the program provides eight weeks of paid internship; allows interns to be mentored by business professionals and receive training in financial literacy, life skills, and leadership growth; financial sponsors included Bank of America, Public Education Foundation, Carollo Engineers, and the Nevada Children and Family Development Center; student recruitment included Clark County School District, Jobs for Nevada Graduates, and Workforce Connections; Project 150’s Betty’s Boutique, Financial Literacy, and Curriculum and Facilitator My Paths; and Civil Engagements Project Collaboration’s The Strong Future Youth Employment Program through the City of Las Vegas.

$35,500 received in monetary donations.  Private donations assist in providing students workshops, scholarships, student stipends, incentive awards, needed materials and assisting with other program related expenses.

 

BACKGROUND: 

Founded in 1996, the Summer Business Institute represents a collaborative effort among Clark County, other government entities, and the local business community.  Participation in the program gives students the opportunity to have a meaningful summer internship that will support their academic and professional careers beyond high school.  The Board of County Commissioners is requested to accept donations from the following agencies and private companies:

The proclamations will be presented to the donors who have provided financial assistance and/or in kind donations exceeding $2,000.00 value with the student workshops, scholarships, student stipends, incentive awards, needed materials and other program related expenses.
