BACKGROUND:

The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (NVHSS) designated the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner (CCOCME) as their bona fide agent to coordinate all Child Death Review (CDR) teams in Nevada in order to become one of the few states nationwide participating in the SDY Registry.  The program is designed to track all deaths in young persons in order to identify risk factors and develop/implement strategies aimed at reducing future child deaths.

The CDCSDY grant is intended to enhance the existing surveillance system to comprehensively identify SDY cases in infants and children and build upon existing CDR programs statewide in Nevada.  This grant program would fund a limited-permanent Coroner Investigator position to manage the program and serves as the state liaison, data collector and data upload coordinator on child deaths in Nevada.  Funds would also be utilized on equipment, supplies and travel.

Based upon the previous successes of CCOCME participation in Federal and State grant programs, it is recommended the Board approve the ratification of Federal Grant #5 NU38DP000004-04-00 and accept the funds awarded on behalf of the Coroner.
