BACKGROUND:

The UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law operates an Immigration Clinic, a community agency providing legal services for immigration deportation defense for children and detained adults.  The Nevada Legislature, through AB 376 (2021), appropriated State of Nevada funds for the purpose of providing pro bono legal services relating to immigration law.  UNLV has requested the County to match that appropriation.

This interlocal provides that the County will provide an amount up to $250,000.00 from gross revenue fees relating to marijuana licenses imposed by the Clark County Code to the Immigration Clinic during the fiscal years 2021-22 and 2022-23 (for a total of up to $500,00.00) to be solely used for legal services for immigration defense of children and detained adults.  The contribution is subject to the County receiving gross revenue fees relating to marijuana licensing in excess of $12,000,000.00.

The agreement also requires that UNLV provide a quarterly report documenting the expenditure of funds.  If the funds are not used by September 15, 2023, they must be returned to the County.

The District Attorney’s Office has reviewed and approved the interlocal agreement as to form.
