BACKGROUND:
The Felony DUI Court is a court supervised treatment program for individuals charged with their third felony DUI. The program is a three to five year treatment program in lieu of prison. The program offers substance abuse and mental health treatment, randomized urinalysis testing and regular status checks to ensure compliance. Successful completion of the program will result in the felony DUI charge being reduced to a 2nd offense misdemeanor DUI conviction.
The mission of the Felony DUI Court Program is to enhance public safety and reduce recidivism by combining effective substance abuse treatment and intensive judicial supervision in a therapeutic court setting for non-violent, chronic DUI offenders, in order to assist the participant in choosing and developing a structured, disciplined, law abiding alcohol and drug free way of life.
The primary goal of the project is to increase the success rate of program completion through the delivery of intensive clinical case management services. This project will help partially fund one full-time coordinator who will intervene in Felony DUI court cases to ensure participants receive the services needed to successfully complete the program. With this position and partial funding from the Office of Traffic Safety, the Felony DUI program has been able to successfully retain 89.5% of the participants during October 1st, 2020 to September 30th, 2021. The primary benefit of this project is increasing Felony DUI participants’ successful completion through clinical case management effectively wrapping participants in the needed support and services.
The grant provides $47,846.00 for partial support of one (1) current full-time, salary position, for a Specialty Court Coordinator (I28) to take on a caseload and support the required grant reporting requirements.
