BACKGROUND:
At the June 21, 2022, Board of County Commissioners meeting, Commissioner Naft brought forward a discussion item to amend the County code by prohibiting the sale of dogs, cats, rabbits, and potbellied pigs from retail stores. Direction was given to staff to conduct a Business Impact Statement and prepare an ordinance to amend Title 10.
The purpose of the amendment is to better regulate the sale of dogs, cats, rabbits, and potbellied pigs and to reduce the market for animals bred by “puppy mills”, as well as, to help relieve overcrowding in animal shelters.
Staff recommends that the ordinance to amend Chapters 10.04 and 10.08 of the County Code be introduced and a public hearing be set for November 1, 2022.
