BACKGROUND:

The Department of Justice (DOJ) Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) has awarded the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner (CCOCME) with the FY22 Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grant. The grant is intended to enhance and improve CCOCME's quality and timeliness of their records and documents recall capabilities.

CCOCME retains approximately 2,500 records which include items such as carbon copied reports, old polaroid photographs and Betamax and VHS tapes that need to be transferred to a permanent digital format for recall capabilities. Additionally, the physical files and documents in their existing condition require significant space for storage.

The Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement grant funds will be used to digitize records for the unidentified decedents and integrating the records of identified decedents by creating high resolution copies of documents to preserve readability, scan documents and photos and upload them to CCOCME's electronic case management system. This will assist with preserving CCOCME's historical files. This grant would also fund one (1) part-time Grant Supervisor and three (3) part-time grant clerical support staff. In addition this grant would fund the necessary equipment and supplies needed for this project such as; high resolution scanners, computers and printers.

Based upon the previous successes of CCOCME participation in Federal and State grant programs, it is recommended the Board ratify the acceptance of Federal Grant Award #15PBJA-22-GG-03623-Cove.
