BACKGROUND:

The National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) has selected the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner (CCOCME) to receive grant funding in the amount of $19,926 to support CCOCME's proposal to purchase supplies and software. CCOCME was selected as the award recipient out of the 99 applications NNPHI had received.

The Expanded Infrastructure Support for Coroner, Medical Examiner and Medicolegal Death Investigator offices award is intended to upgrade the existing cameras and camera software equipment to enhance the images of investigation and autopsy photos. The equipment CCOCME currently uses are point and shoot models which lead to poor quality photos and discoloration. Proper color photos and high-quality images are essential to capturing images that will later be reviewed by Forensic Pathologist/Medical Examiners, researchers and epidemiologists. The growth rate in Clark County has increased significantly over the past 5 years leading to an increased case volume. Upgrading the existing cameras and camera software equipment allows CCOCME to assist with the facilitation of timely and comprehensive data sharing with other public health agencies. The upgrade will also provide detailed information through training and education programs that CCOCME is actively involved to include; International Association of Coroner Medical Examiners (IACME), American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) and the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME). The cameras will be used by Coroner Investigators who are on the scene investigating decedent deaths and will assist CCOCME to better ensure the accuracy when reporting decedents cause and manner of death.

It is recommended the Board approve the ratification of the Expanded Infrastructure Support for Coroner, Medical Examiner and Medicolegal Death Investigator offices award and accept the funds awarded on behalf of the Coroner.
