BACKGROUND:

In March 2023, the Clark County Parks & Recreation (CCPR) Department, Hollywood Recreation center received an announcement from Green Our Planet promoting their Hydroponics Stem Program grant opportunity.  The "Hydroponics Stem Program grant " will provide funding for training and implementation of a program focused on STEM, nutrition, and conservation in a hands-on natural laboratory.

Green Our Planet grant will provide enough hydroponics systems for up to 20 classrooms, including a 4’x3’x4′ commercial unit that can grow more than 200 plants at a time. Green Our Planet also supplies each school/facility with all necessary materials: a seed germinator, nutrient fertilizers, pH, and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) measurement tools and more valued at $8,000, to CCPR if selected.  CCPR will be required to provide an in-kind match of $2,000 to purchase the remaining supplies.

Hollywood Recreation center would utilize the awarded funds to expand STEM learning opportunities for preschool participants, daily youth and teen programs promoting STEM. Additional activities would be focused on improving social, emotional, academic, and behavioral outcomes.

The goal of this opportunity is to increase Hydroponic awareness, STEM, nutrition, and positive behaviors in youth who participate in this program.

Staff requests that the Board approve and authorize the submission of the grant application and accept the funds awarded.
