BACKGROUND:
April 2025 marks the 57th Anniversary of the passage of the Federal Fair Housing Law, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968. This Act states: "It is the policy of the United States to provide, within Constitutional limitations, for fair housing throughout the United States." The law makes it illegal "to discriminate against any person in the terms, condition, or privileges of the sale or rental of a dwelling, or in the provision of services or facilities in connection therewith, because of their race, color, religion, national origin, or sex."
The Fair Housing Amendments of 1988 added familial status and disabilities to the classes protected. Nevada state law also prohibits discrimination based on ancestry, sexual orientation, and gender identity or expression. Federal Fair Housing Law gave enforcement responsibility to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Over the years, HUD has helped thousands of citizens to obtain homes and apartments that were, at first, illegally denied to them. Nevertheless, there are still families who have not been permitted to buy or rent the home of their choice despite their protected class.
Various commemorative and educational activities have taken place and are planned in Clark County and throughout the U.S. during the month of April. Clark County has again entered into contractual agreement with Silver State Fair Housing Council to provide fair housing education, monitoring, and technical assistance in the investigation and enforcement of fair housing complaints and alleged fair housing discrimination in Clark County.
